What a Moon sign actually is

The Moon takes about 27.3 days to travel the zodiac, so it spends roughly two and a quarter days in each sign — against the Sun's month. That speed is the whole reason the two signs describe different things. Your Sun sign is shared with everyone born within about thirty days of you; your Moon sign narrows that to a window of about two days.

In practice, astrologers read the Moon as the reactive self: what you do before you have decided how to behave. It is the part of a chart that people recognise immediately in themselves and rarely show at work.

Why we ask for your birth time

The Moon moves about 13 degrees a day — roughly half a degree an hour. For most birthdays that is nowhere near a sign boundary and the time is irrelevant. But on the days when the Moon changes sign, an unknown time makes the answer genuinely undecidable, and a calculator that quietly assumes midnight or noon will hand you a confident wrong answer.

So we do it differently: if you tell us your time is unknown, we check whether the Moon crossed a boundary that day and say so. That is also why we ask where you were born rather than just which country — the birth time has to be converted to universal time, and that conversion depends on the exact timezone rules in force at that location on that date, including daylight-saving rules that have since been repealed.

Moon sign and Sun sign are not rivals

A common misreading is that the Moon sign is the “real” sign and the Sun sign is a mass-market simplification. Traditionally they answer different questions: the Sun is what you are moving toward, the Moon is what you return to. People with the two in the same sign often describe feeling unusually consistent; people with them in conflicting elements — a Fire Sun with a Water Moon, say — often describe a lifelong argument with themselves.
